Connected Summit 2023: Government reiterates its commitment to support local startups

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting technology and innovation in the country by supporting local startups.

Speaking at the Connected Kenya Summit, which kicked off today in Diani Kwale County, the CS said the government will continue to support domestic IT production, technological projects, startup initiatives, and research.

‘’Is our intention to make Kenya the regional hub for technology transfer and a more inclusive innovation economy essential for the nation’s growth, competitiveness, domestic harmony, and national security,’’ he said.

Mudavadi noted that the government intends to bring together R&D institutions such as tech-enabled corporations, universities, and medical facilities; as well as venture capitalists, incubators, and startups that will enable Kenya to become a country that is the catalyst for digital change.

This comes after a recent report gave Kenya’s startup ecosystem a thumbs up, noting that it has grown by leaps and bounds over the last decade. The report, funded by the UK government noted across Kenya, the burgeoning startup sector has the potential to generate wealth, employment, and skills.

The country has been ranked 3rd in Africa in the latest Global Startup Ecosystem Index behind South Africa and Nigeria. The number of startups, incubators, and accelerator programs is rising with a number of startups across different sectors also popping up.

The Connected Summit is being held under the theme The Digital Economy:  Endless opportunities shaping the future.

The summit seeks to review progress and achievements in the ICT sector and share knowledge, case studies, best practice, and lessons learned based on experiences by ICT practitioners. It also seeks to develop and recommend policy, regulatory, and operational interventions and provide a platform for meaningful networking that will result in fruitful relationships that contribute to economic development.
