Telegram reports 700 Million monthly users, launches premium subscription
Cloud-based messaging service Telegram is one of the fastest-growing social media and messaging platforms in the world. As it hits 700 million monthly users, Telegram has announced a subscription service that will help to unlock more functionalities for users.
In a statement celebrating the milestone, the company said, “Telegram became one of the top-5 downloaded apps worldwide in 2022 and now has over 700 million monthly active users. This growth is solely from personal recommendations.”
Telegram Premium will give users exclusive additional features which include faster downloads, exclusive stickers and reactions, improved chat management and up to 4 GB of file uploads (from 2 GB).
“All existing features that users have come to expect and rely on for nearly a decade remain free. Moreover, non-premium users will be able to enjoy some of Premium’s benefits.” Telegram wrote on its official blog.
Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov had hinted earlier this month about the launch of the premium tier, saying users have been requesting additional storage/bandwidth
“After giving it some thought, we realized that the only way to let our most demanding fans get more while keeping our existing features free is to make those raised limits a paid option.”
Telegram abandoned its blockchain project in 2020 after facing regulatory hurdles. The blockchain platform was excepted to turn around the company’s fortunes, given that it doesn’t run Ads.
The premium service could be Telegram’s game-changer. No other messaging app in the top tier including Signal, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Apple’s Messages and Google’s Messages offers a premium paid-up service.
