For slightly over one decade, Tech Nation, a non-profit UK-based organization has been providing assistance to global tech talent, outsourcing available opportunities, and facilitating entry into the UK. Tech Nation is credited for helping nearly a third of the country’s 122 unicorns raise and grow since 2011.

The company has now announced that it’s shutting down, following the withdrawal of key funding by the UK government. Reports indicate that the funding has been directed towards another program run by Barclays Bank.

The organization runs the Tech Nation Visa (officially known as Global Talent Visa), one of its most popular programs which helps tech talent worldwide to enter and work in the UK with their families.

“After a decade as a government-backed organization serving the UK scale-up tech ecosystem, we are today announcing that Tech Nation will be closing its doors from 31st March 2023,” a statement from the organization stated.

Tech Nation revealed it’s not in a position to comment on what might happen after 31 March, but the Home Office under which the organization operates said that it’s working with the organization “to ensure continuity of the digitech strand of the Global Talent visa in the short term, whilst we explore the long-term changes necessary in light of Tech Nation’s planned closure.”

The non-profit organization has been instrumental in assisting dozens of accelerator programs, helping numerous tech startups to find their footing in the UK and expand in other markets.

Barclays’ tech incubator Eagle Labs will use the government grant — which has been awarded for just two years — to launch new programs to help tech companies. Eagle Labs has worked with startups across the UK since 2015. However, Barclay’s bank program will not take over Tech Nation’s role in administering global talent visas.
