Snapchat Stops Promoting Donald Trump’s Snap Account Over His Violence Tweets

Snapchat will not promote Donald Trump ’s verified Snapchat account, the company says. This decision follows Trump’s tweets over the weekend which were censored by Twitter for inciting violence.

Snapchat has also taken a stand over the same tweets saying that they did promote violence.

“We will not amplify voices who incite racial violence and injustice by giving them free promotion on Discover. Racial violence and injustice have no place in our society and we stand together with all who seek peace, love, equality, and justice in America,” Snapchat said in a statement.

The US President’s Snapchat account will be retained on the platform but it will no longer appear on the Discover tab. The Discover tab is a popular way for snap users to discover news publishers, and other public figures thus providing them with free promotion.

Snapchat’s move is bold unlike what other platforms like Facebook are doing.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel, in a message sent to employees on Sunday, said they “cannot promote accounts in America that are linked to people who incite racial violence, whether they do so on or off our platform.”

He further said that the Discover section is highly curated and the company decides what to promote.

Moving forward, however, the company “may continue to allow divisive people” to have their accounts as long as it adheres to Snapchat’s community guidelines.
