Samsung Announces Exynos 990 SoC – Supports up to 120Hz refresh rates

Yesterday at the Samsung Tech Day 2019, the South Korean tech giant announced a new processor – Exynos 990. Main highlights of the new SoC includes a 20 percent boost in performance, graphical processing as well as power efficiency.

Exynos 990 is manufactured using the 7nm EUV process. It consists of eight cores with a flexible tri-cluster CPU structure made up of two powerful custom cores, two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores, and four power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores. It is paired with ARM’s Mali G77MP11 GPU.

Exynos 990 also brings on-device AI, which results in more efficiency and as well as security of data. It consists of a dual-core neural processing unit (NPU) and an improved digital signal processor (DSP).

Main features that will be brought on Samsung devices, thanks to the Exynos 990, include 120Hz display refresh rates, 4K UHD display, up to 8K 30fps video recording, or 4K UHD 120fps and a single 108MP camera or Dual 24.8 MP + 24.8 MP camera.

Alongside the Exynos 990, Samsung also announced a new 5G modem termed as Exynos Modem 5123. It supports dual-band 5G with both sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums.

Samsung says the modem “maximum downlink speed of up to 5.1-gigabits per second (Gbps) in sub-6-gigahertz (GHz) and 7.35Gbps in mmWave.

You can also achieve up to 3.0Gbps downlink speeds in 4G networks through the support of higher-order 1024 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM).

Mass production of the new processors will start by the end of this year. The chip may be in Samsung’s 2020 flagship devices.
