Qualcomm Announces Three New 4G Powered Mobile Processors For Non-5G folks

Towards the end of 2019, Qualcomm unveiled its next-gen chips that will power most of 2020s premium and high mid-range devices. They all supported 5G, and that seemed like a big deal to nations that are not yet prepared for the 5G era like Kenya, for example. (Safaricom has however been seen trying to test 5G in the country)

Even though premium 2020 handsets will have 5G at their core, 4G LTE is still a thing, and it’s here to stay.

Qualcomm still wants a share in this and has today unveiled three mobile chipsets that are 4G focused. The new chipsets include Snapdragon 720G, 662, and 460, which have been announced at an event in India this morning.

The chipsets boast WI-FI 6 features, integrated Bluetooth 5.1, and improved location positioning accuracy and robustness.

The most potent chip here is the Snapdragon 720G, as you would expect. This is the chip that will be featured on higher-end 4G phones in the mid-range category.

Snapdragon 720G is gaming-focused, which means you should expect 10-Bit HDR gaming as well as anti-cheating measures stacked in last year’s premium Snapdragon 855 chipset.

The CPU is an octa-core set and has Qualcomm’s Hexagon 692 DSP for on-device AI. Phones powered by this chipset will have 4K video-recording capability and high 2520 x 1080 resolution displays.

Snapdragon 662 is also an octa-core chipset with high clock speeds of up to 2.0GHz. On the photography front, this chipset will bring the new triple camera configurations.

The last chipset announced was the Snapdragon 460, a successor to last year’s 450. It sports a better CPU as well as GPU and is more than 50 percent faster than the latter, according to Qualcomm.

The company did not state when commercial devices running these chipsets will be available on the market.
