Kenyan edutainment startup Kakua has raised $6M in Series A funding

Kakua, an edutainment startup based in Kenya has raised $6M Series A funding. The funding was led by China’s Tencent Investment and Ital-based VC Alchimia. Other funders in this round include EchoVC, FirstMinute Capital and Auxxo Female Catalyst.

Kakua, which has offices in Nairobi and London was set up in 2018 by Lucrezia Bisgnani and created its first product three years later in 2021. The product named Super Sema is a story of a 10-year-old African girl, a superhero, with the powers of creativity, determination and team skills. She uses science, tech, engineering, arts and math to create inventions from her secret lab to fight this evil robot villain, her town’s ruler, and his minions.

CEO and co-founder Bisgnani told TechChrunch, “When I started this, we saw there were no African characters, and very few that were just Black. So, we thought this was a much-needed space, not only for kids in Africa but globally. It’s for kids to feel represented and to grow up with cartoons that are not only white but also to understand different cultures and themes.”

Bisgnani said she has travelled widely throughout the continent which gave her a global mindset. The CEO said The fund will be invested in building IP-focused edutainment for children through the new Super Sema original content, licensing, merchandising, and publishing.
