Google has introduced Bard, a rival product to ChatGPT

Story Highlights
  • Bard is powered by the company's LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) technology.
  • Google has opened opened up Bard to trusted testers ahead of making it more widely available to the public in the coming weeks.
  • Google seeks to provide its chatbot for use in making internet searches more conversational, friendlier, and accurate.

Google has announced the introduction of its conversational AI chatbot, a direct rival of the now-viral ChatGPT created by OpenAI. The new product is named Bard.

In a statement on Monday, CEO Sundar Pichai said that the product, which is powered by the company’s LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) technology has been opened up to trusted testers ahead of making it more widely available to the public in the coming weeks.

“Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses.”

The world has been waiting for Google’s in-house product and it will be interesting to see how it performs against ChatGPT which has dominated AI conversations in recent weeks.

“We’re releasing it initially with our lightweight model version of LaMDA. This much smaller model requires significantly less computing power, enabling us to scale to more users, allowing for more feedback.”

Google seeks to provide its chatbot for use in making internet searches more conversational, friendlier, and accurate.

Pichai said that the use of AI-powered features in its search engine will help to “still complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web: whether that’s seeking out additional perspectives, like blogs from people who play both piano and guitar, or going deeper on a related topic, like steps to get started as a beginner.”

As tech giants continue to rival each other in building the most outstanding AI products, consumers will certainly benefit from improved performance wherever the tech is applied.
