Glovo Reports Increased Grocery Deliveries in Kenya

Glovo has reported an increase in deliveries in the country since the first case of covid-19 was registered in Kenya.

The onset of the pandemic saw the company implement various safety measures to ensure the safety of its partners and customers, continuing operations even as the country entered into partial lockdown.

Due to the lockdown, delivery services have proved handy to those who don’t want to go out and get whatever they need individually.

The on-demand delivery startup, Glovo, says the grocery deliveries have increased by 30 per cent.

Cleaning agents and hygiene products remained hot sellers since the pandemic kicked in, resulting in a 25 per cent sales increase.

Glovo also reports an uptick in cashless payments. Payments via credit cards have gone up by 50 per cent, while mobile payments only rose by 14 percent in the period.

App downloads have also increased locally by 20 to 25 percent.

The on-demand delivery startup entered the market in February 2019 with a key focus on Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, after launching in Morocco and Cairo. Today, Glovo is available in several towns in the country.

Throughout the on-demand delivery industry, the volume of deliveries has risen across the globe, including Kenya.

In an interview with TechTrendsKE, Ola Akinnusi, Bolt’s Country Manager, said the company had recorded massive usage on its delivery service (Bolt Business Delivery) launched barely four months ago in the middle of the pandemic.

Earlier this month, Uber’s Q2 earnings report also indicated a similar pattern.  The company’s food delivery arm, Uber Eats, recorded a massive increase in usage and, surprisingly, even surpassing its main ride-hailing business.

Priscilla Muhiu, Glovo Kenya’s General Manager, expects the shifting pattern in online shopping and delivery services to continue despite the reopening of the economy, citing the increased consumption of digital services worldwide.

“During this period, we have witnessed changes in shopping patterns due to the shift in preferences by consumers in the country hence this has helped us to focus more on addressing what the consumer needs,” she added.
