At the on-going CES 2020 show, AMD’s keynote has been filled with goodies, almost entirely. Part of the goodies includes the newly announced third-generation Ryzen processors for laptops.

The Ryzen 4000 series of chips is based on the company’s own 7nm Zen 2 processing technology. Compared to the second-gen Ryzen processors, AMD’s latest chipsets are twice more power-efficient, which is due to the big leap from 12nm process in the former to the 7nm process.

The chipsets will be power laptops from across the board including those “ultra-portable” laptops to the massive chunky gaming laptops.

There are of three kinds; first is the 15W Ryzen U-Series for ultra-portable consumer laptops, the power-hungry 45W Ryzen H-Series that will power gaming laptops, and lastly, the Pro series which will be on ultra-thin professional laptops. AMD boasts that the Ryzen H-Series line will bring desktop-class performance to the laptops.

Like the old generation processors, AMD is retaining the Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5, and Ryzen 7 naming scheme for both the U and H series of chipsets.

Ryzen 7 U-series is the company’s flagship processor under the U series, and AMD did compare it to Intel’s highly specced Core i7-1065G7 during the keynote.

AMD CEO Lisa Su said the Ryzen 7 4800U offers a 4 percent better performance in single-thread processing, and a 90 percent jump in multithread cases. It is also 28 percent better on the graphics front. That shouldn’t be surprising considering Intel’s highly specced Core i7-1065G7 is based on the 10nm architecture.

The Ryzen 7 4800U features 8 Zen 2 cores, 16-threads and has a 1.8 GHz base clock speeds that top to 4.2 GHz when boosted. The Ryzen Ryzen 7 4800H, on the other hand, sports similar cores and threads but boasts 2.9 GHz base clocking speeds that can boost up to 4.2 GHz.

Availability

The first AMD Ryzen 4000 series laptops will start shipping in Q1, 2020. Manufactures that are ready to leverage these powerful chips include Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, among others. The company says over 100 laptops will be running on their chips this year.
