Mary Wambui Mungai has been appointed the new board chair of the Communications Authority of Kenya (CK) effective December 2, 2022.
Mary takes over from Captain Gilbert Kibe who resigned from the authority to pursue personal interests. Kibe was appointed by former president Uhuru Kenyatta to the commission on May 13, 2022, for a period of three years.
President Ruto, in a Gazette notice published today, announced that Ms Mungai will be taking over the position.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 (1) (a) of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, I William Ruto, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces of the Republic of Kenya appoint Mary Wambui Mungai to be the Chairperson of the Board of Communications Authority of Kenya, for a period of three (3) years, with effect from the 2nd December 2022,” a Gazette notice by the president read.
The notice further noted that Kibe’s appointment had been revoked.
Ms Mungai is not a new face to the public. The billionaire businesswoman has previously been charged with tax evasion alongside her daughter, Purity Njoki Mungai. The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) accused the two, both directors of Purma Holdings, of evading to pay Sh2.5 billion by failing to declare the correct taxes from 2014 to 2019.
Wambui will serve the authority for a period of three years effective today, Friday, December 2.
