Apple’s Independent Repair Provider Program Expands to Kenya and over 200 Other Countries

You'll soon be able to get your iPhone or iPad fixed at more "certified" locations

Getting an iPhone or other Apple device repaired is not cheap. This is partly due to Apple’s strict stance on who can repair its devices. The company has been a significant enemy of the “right-to-repair” movement that is slowly gaining traction.

Luckily, Apple has responded, and it is now expanding its repair program to even more technicians and in more countries where it sells products.

Apple’s Independent Repair Provider program, launched in 2019, is expanding to more than 200 countries this year, the company says. The program’s massive expansion ensures that it will be available in virtually every country where its devices are sold.

More users will have easier access to certified technicians through the program to help diagnose and repair their broken device(s). The Independent Repair Provider program is the company’s way to bridge the gap between small repair shops and Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs).

While the latter has been consistently expensive, like going to Apple Store locations, independent repair providers could, presumably, help lower the repair price, which has consistently been on the rise with every new iteration of the iPhone.

Expansion of the program also means Apple device owners will have more locations to get their devices repaired.

How to Join Apple’s Independent Repair Provider program

Technicians can apply for the program for free. According to the company, to be an Apple-certified technician, training is a must, but it will be offered for free.

Participants will have access to similar genuine parts, tools, repair manuals, and diagnostics as AASPs and Apple Store locations. Apple’s Independent Repair Provider program will land in Kenya later this year in dozens of other African countries, including Uganda and Nigeria. There’s no specific date provided as of now.

Since its launch in the US in 2019, the program expanded to Canada and Europe last year. It now boasts over 1,500 Independent Repair Provider locations across the US, Canada, and Europe.
