Vodacom customers in Tanzania can now buy apps on Google Play Store using their airtime

Vodacom Tanzania customers can now pay for content on Google Play Store using their airtime balance. This after the operator signed a partnership deal with Google that will allow the customers to do so.

The service which is available to all customers using Android devices integrates Google Play Store apps purchases with Vodacom Airtime mode of payment.

“Leveraging Vodacom’s superfast 4G Network, we are thrilled to partner with Google to bring this convenient, easy and reliable method of payment for Google Play Store Apps purchases to Tanzania. This further cements our commitment to deliver digital inclusion, whilst providing more convenience and value to our customers. This is more pertinent to our market where credit card penetration is low.” Vodacom head of Communication and Public Relations Department, Jacquiline Materu, said.

Customers wishing to take advantage of this payment solution simply need to enter Google play store > Select a content (Games/Apps or Movies) > Go to Buy option > then Select Vodacom Airtime billing as a mode of payment then you will be required to enter your personal details then proceed with payment after confirmation. These step are only required for the first purchase and for next purchases, payment should happen automatically, upon selection of Vodacom Airtime billing.

“We are very excited to expand the Google Play Direct Carrier Billing partnership with Vodacom Group and launch with Vodacom Tanzania. Carrier billing is one of the key drivers for financial inclusion in the app economy in markets where most of the people are still unbanked.” Cassandra Mensah-Abrampah , Android Platform Partnerships Manager | Africa from Google, said.
