TECNO Mobile has donated food and other assorted items to residents of Daaba in Isiolo county, one of the hardest hit areas by the ongoing drought.
TECNO partnered with Action Aid to donate the foodstuffs, water tanks and sanitary kits including sanitary pads, soap, and lotion for women worth Ksh.2 million to 425 households in the county.
According to TECNO Mobile, the donations were made possible thanks to the campaign the company has been running with its new launched Tecno Camon CX smartphone. For every Camon CX device bought, TECNO mobile donated Ksh.100 to Action Aid to help support the communities in drought-stricken areas.
With a population of about 150,000 people, Isiolo county is one of the hardest hit areas with the ravaging drought and received the last ever distribution a year ago. Reports indicate that about 60,000 people in the county are in need of food aid due to the persistent drought. The county and other arid and semi-arid counties Kenya is in the grips of a severe drought, largely attributed to climate change. The company also announced plans to donate an additional Ksh2 million to homes in Samburu county as well as donate to the Kajiado County School feeding program starting May 2017.
More than 1.3 million Kenyans are currently facing starvation and are in dire need of relief food and according to Kenya Red Cross, the number is likely to rise to 2.5 million by April 2017.
TECNO mobile expects the donation to last the residents of Isiolo for about a month.
