Samsung Galaxy S8 has a 12MP camera; lower than most of its competitors. But why does it give superior photo quality?

Going by the number of device manufacturers who have pitched tent in the market, the Kenyan consumer is spoilt for choice when it comes to the purchase of smartphones. From entry level devices to flagship models, manufacturers have made sure to cater for individual needs, tastes, and preferences.

The modern consumer will appreciate nature first through the camera lens and the smartphone gets the first chance to admire food even before it touches the owner’s lips. On to this, add the growing selfie culture and the camera quality from the smartphone has become a major consideration when it comes to making the purchase decision.

On this background, device vendors are gunning to outdo each other on the number of megapixels a smartphone has, with the aim of capturing the attention of the consumer. Even so, Samsung Electronics are taking a different route when it comes to the camera on their flagship devices. The megapixels have been reduced from 16MP in the Galaxy S6 to 12MP in the Samsung Galaxy S8. Despite this, the quality of the images has improved, enabling the Galaxy S8 to take awesome images even in low light.

What’s the secret? Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones have always been at the forefront of camera development. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ have taken mobile photography to a new level. Both feature a 12MP rear camera that utilizes Dual Pixel technology for incredibly fast autofocus, an F1.7 Lens and an enhanced 8MP front camera with auto focus, facial recognition and enhanced multi-frame processing technology.

The sophisticated multi-frame image processor on the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the F1.7 lens on both back and front cameras give bright and clear photographs in low light/dark environments

The latest device also comes with a multi-frame processing technology that allows the camera take three photos of a particular scene. From the three, it selects the clearest image and uses the other two to reduce the blur. By imposing the three images on top of one another, the resulting image is highly detailed with clearer contours. This even applies to images captured in less-than-ideal conditions such as when zoomed-in in low light.

Furthermore, the camera captures and processes the image faster, thanks to the new 10nm Octa Exynos processor. The processor is much more efficient allowing 27 percent faster performance compared to its predecessor and consumes 40 percent less power.

With Dual Pixel technology, every single pixel enables precise and fast focusing, much in the same way that the human eye does. By splitting all of the camera’s pixels into two photodiodes for on-chip phase detection, the technology enables vastly improved autofocus performance, even in low light.

The Galaxy S8’s 8MP F1.7 front camera has been equipped with autofocus features and facial recognition technology so it can better recognize and track faces, even when the distance between the camera and the subjects in the photo is increased. The result is superior selfie quality with a sharper, more detailed picture.

One of the key talking points about the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ is the large Infinity Display that takes up more than 80 percent of the phone’s front screen. Even with the phone’s large display, users can effortlessly launch and control the camera app with one hand.

With advanced photo processing, fun new features, and a convenient user experience, the Galaxy S8 delivers on Samsung’s heritage of offering best-in-class Galaxy technology.
