Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore will be away for a couple of months to receive specialized treatment, the company’s chairman Nicholas Ng’ang’a has announced.
According to a statement sent out on Monday during this prolonged sick leave Sateesh Kamath, the current Chief Financial Officer for Safaricom who is also Mr. Collymore’s alternate on the Board, will take a primary role.
Sateesh Kamath will be supported by Joseph Ogutu who is the current Director – Strategy and Innovation at the company. Mr. Ogutu will be responsible for Safaricom’s day-to-day operations until Mr. Collymore’s return from medical leave.
The company did not, however, give details on the nature of Collymore’s sickness.
“On behalf of the board, management, and the entire Safaricom community, I wish Bob quick recovery and look forward to him resuming his duties as soon as doctors allow him to do so,” said Nicholas Ng’ang’a.
NASA accuses Safaricom of abetting election rigging
Safaricom has recently come under attack from the NASA after Raila Odinga accused it of abetting rigging through its network during the August 8th polls. Raila Odinga alleged that Safaricom worked IEBC to derail the transmission of presidential results. It also accused the company of conspiring to cover up electoral offenses committed by IEBC and French IT firm OT-Morpho.
Safaricom, however, dismissed the claims with Bob Collymore terming the allegations made by Raila Odinga and the NASA coalition as factually incorrect and unsupported by any evidence whatsoever.
