Kenyans bought more Infinix smartphones than HTC between February 2016 and February 2017


Infinix was the most sought after smartphone brand in Kenya in between February 2016 and February 2017. According to the Kenya Electronic Market Report from Data Fintech, the brand beat HTC to stand at 61.5% during this period.

The insights are based on data collected from the online marketplace pigiame.co.ke.

The report found out that the supply of Infinix brand was bullish from August 2016 to February 2017 increasing by 266%. The supply the report says was seen to lead the market for the brand, which saw it increased by 79.8%, while the demand increased by 53%.

In November 2016 to February 2017, the supply increased by 94.6% while the demand increased by 352% within the same period.

‘’In the second half of 2016 and in 2017, Infinix has been unchallenged by HTC. In merchant supply, HTC has been unrivaled by Infinix by dominating the whole period between February 2016 and February 2017 with a widespread. ‘’ the report says.

The total market value of HTC phones listed on the marketplace recorded was found to be Ksh 56.3m at 13.8% of the total listings against Ksh. 16.9m at 4.1% for the Infinix brand.

The two brands accounted for 36% of the listing value in the Kshs.10,000 to Kshs.20, 000 price segment. By listing, the report found out that both smartphone brands have continuously increased over the period. HTC increased by 154% while Infinix increased by 250% between February 2016 and February 2017.

The report further found out that for the first half of 2016, the demand led the supply in the market with the release of HTC m10 in May 2016 boosting the demand. The supply, however, remained constant through the year.

The Kenyan mobile phone market has been ranked as one of the fastest growing markets and both the two brands have a strong presence in several African countries besides Kenya including Egypt and Nigeria.

As the uptake of mobile services by Kenyans continued to grow it will be interesting to see how these two brands will battle out this year.

Infinix seems to be already finding its way to to the top again as it has already launched its new device in the country. The company launched the Infinix S2, its first ever dual camera smartphone. The smartphone was launched on April 10th.
