WhatsApp may come to your desktop soon: Report

AndroidWorld has recently published a report suggesting that world popular instant messaging service WhatsApp is developing a web version of the app, which will allow you to use the service on desktop too.

The report comes days after Pavel Durov’s revelations about strings in the code of WhatsApp that suggest of a web version. Paul Durov is co-founder of a new messaging app Telegram.

A recent WhatsApp update (v2.11.471) has mentions of ‘WhatsApp Web’ within its code. The code also mentions references to logging in/out of computers as well as tracking user statuses online. The report added that the code did not make any mention of Facebook, which means that the users of the messaging service might not need to log into the web-based service via their respective Facebook accounts.

WhatsApp is yet to make any statement on this report. It is notable that WhatsApp’s rival such as Viber, Telegram, WeChat, and Line have full-fledged web and PC clients for each of their services.

The user base of WhatsApp is however much larger than the above mentioned names as the service boasts of over 600 million active users. Experts maintain that if WhatsApp decides to launch a desktop service in the future, it will only increase the user base of the company.
